Geologists studying thermal imaging data captured by the Venus Express spacecraft spotted spikes in temperature by several hundred degrees along the planet’s surface, which could be the result of active lava flows.

The new study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, found that these transient rises in temperature occurred in the planet’s Ganiki Chasma, a rift zone where stretched crustal plates cause mantle from below the surface to rise and decompress before turning molten.

This activity was captured by the Express probe’s Venus Monitoring Camera, which is designed to take images in near-infrared wavelengths, providing a more detailed view of the planet beyond its swirling, unstable atmosphere. It’s believed that the hot areas detected are likely to be a combination of lava pools, superheated rocks or surging clouds of gas erupting from Venus’s surface.

The study’s lead author, Eugene Shalygin of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, said: “These four hotspots are located in what are known from radar imagery to be tectonic rift zones, but this is the first time we have detected that they are hot and changing in temperature from day to day. It is the most tantalising evidence yet for active volcanism.”

Scientists have long thought that Venus — just like Earth — could be volcanic. Back in 2010, ESA’s mission identified a dark spot towards the planet’s south pole, suggesting lava deposits. Then in 2012, researchers observed rocketing levels of sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere, which mimicked that of volcanic activity.

Although the Venus Express finally ran out of fuel in November 2014, following its successful eight-year flight, it’s hoped that future missions will be able to probe Venus’s seemingly active geology and discover definitive proof.

About Earth Changes Media w/ Mitch Battros

Mitch Battros is a scientific journalist who is highly respected in both the scientific and spiritual communities due to his unique ability to bridge the gap between modern science and ancient text. Founded in 1995 – Earth Changes TV was born with Battros as its creator and chief editor for his syndicated television show. In 2003, he switched to a weekly radio show as Earth Changes Media. ECM quickly found its way in becoming a top source for news and discoveries in the scientific fields of astrophysics, space weather, earth science, and ancient text. Seeing the need to venture beyond the Sun-Earth connection, in 2016 Battros advanced his studies which incorporates our galaxy Milky Way - and its seemingly rhythmic cycles directly connected to our Solar System, Sun, and Earth driven by the source of charged particles such as galactic cosmic rays, gamma rays, and solar rays. Now, "Science Of Cycles" is the vehicle which brings the latest cutting-edge discoveries confirming his published Equation.
