Thunderstorms have swept across Ipswich, the Gold Coast and southern parts of Brisbane.

The Bureau of Meteorology detected a line of storm cells on the radar near the New South Wales border about 4pm.

The storms hit Beaudesert, Logan City, Sunnybank Hills and Lowood about 5.20 pm and Cleveland, Fernvale, Wynnum and Mount Nebo a short time later.

Thunder claps were heard over the CBD shortly before 6.30pm.

However, the storms did not deliver any significant rainfall, with less than 10 millimetres falling over the southern Gold Coast.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Sam Campbell said an unstable air mass sitting over much of southeast Queensland had generated the storms.

“We have a surface trough that’s lying to the west in line with the Darling Downs that’s acting as a trigger for the thunderstorm activity,” Mr Campbell said.

A maximum temperature of 29 degrees has been forecast for Brisbane on Friday, with a 30 per cent change of rain in the afternoon and evening.

Fine weather has been forecast for the weekend, with top temperatures of 28 degress on Saturday and 30 degrees on Sunday.
