MEXICO CITY – Tropical Storm Hernan picked up strength Sunday off Mexico’s western coast, gaining the potential to become a hurricane as it moved out further into the Pacific Ocean.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sunday that Hernan was about 360 miles (580 kilometers) south-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula and was moving to the northwest at 15 mph (24 kmh). It had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kmh), with higher gusts.

The center said Hernan could become a hurricane by Sunday afternoon and then likely would weaken on Monday. A storm is classified as a hurricane when its sustained windspeed reaches 74 mph (120kph).

Forecasters said the center of Hernan was expected to pass Sunday to the southwest of Socorro Island, part of a volcanic archipelago that is home to a Mexican naval station.
