The New Zealand Herald is reporting casualties and major damage to downtown buildings, including the Christchurch Cathedral. Also reports phone lines down, water running through the streets, and several buildings with serious damage.
New Zealand’s TV3 is reporting the Pyne Gould financial services building has collapsed. Another, unsubstantiated report claims the cathedral has collapsed.The New Zealand Press Association reported that the TVNZ building in Christchurch had collapsed.
The quake occurred at 12:51 p.m., during a normal workday in Christchurch, according to the US Geological Survey. The epicenter was relatively shallow – just 3 miles deep – and close, about 6 miles from the country’s second largest city, where some 26,000 full-time employees work.
